Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak
Principal Secretary for Science, Research and Innovation, State Department for Science Research and Innovation, Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Republic of Kenya.
Before appointment to the State Office, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak was the Director for the Division for Africa, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Technical Cooperation. In this capacity, he facilitated IAEA technical cooperation support to 50 countries in Africa in peaceful use of nuclear technology (including Human health, Agriculture, Industrial, Energy). Before joining the IAEA, Shaukat worked as CEO at the Kenya National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI). He has more than 30 years working experience at various leadership positions including Professor and DVC (Research and Extension) at Egerton University and VC at Umma University, chairman and member of national and international boards, including the chair of Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research institute, African Technology Policy Studies, the Kenya National Economic Social Council, the African Commission on Nuclear Energy and the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. 
Shaukat is a Fellow of International Science Council, The World Academy of Sciences, the African Academy of Sciences, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences. He has published widely in international journals, scientific conference and symposia proceedings. His undergraduate studies were at Egerton University, Kenya. Abdulrazak obtained his Master of Science and PhD degrees from the University of Aberdeen, UK and his Post Doctorate from the Shimane University, Japan.

Dr. Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno, MIEK, CBS is the Principal Secretary, State Department for Environment & Climate Change in Kenya’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry. He serves as the National Focal Point for key global environmental agreements, including the UNFCCC, UNCBD, UNCCD, GCF, and GEF.

He holds a PhD, MSc, and BSc in Environmental & Biosystems Engineering from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership & Corporate Governance from KCA University, and advanced training in the Green and Circular Economy.

Previously, Dr. Ng’eno was the CECM for Water, Sanitation, Environment, Energy & Climate Change in Nakuru County, chaired the Council of Governors’ Water, Environment, and Climate Change Caucus, and served on several national boards.

He has spearheaded major initiatives, including the 15 billion tree growing program, the Sustainable Waste Management Act (2022), the Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, and climate-resilient landscape restoration projects. Internationally, he has represented Kenya at high-level forums such as the Africa Climate Summit, UNEA-6, and COP16 on Biodiversity, advancing Kenya’s leadership in environmental policy, financing, and conservation.

Dr. Eusebius Juma Mukhwana, CBS is the Principal Secretary, State Department for Industry in the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry. Appointed in December 2022, he leads Kenya’s industrial transformation agenda, focusing on expanding manufacturing’s share of GDP, promoting local content through Buy Kenya, Build Kenya, and establishing County Aggregation and Industrial Parks across the country.

He holds a PhD in Soil Science from the University of Wyoming, an MSc in Pharmacology & Toxicology, and a bachelor’s in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi. His career spans academia—where he served as Senior Lecturer, department chair, and acting dean—and senior public service roles, including Director General of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority and deputy CEO at the Commission for University Education.

Dr. Mukhwana also champions SME development through initiatives such as the Kenya Industry and Entrepreneurship Project and represents Kenya in global and regional trade platforms, including UNIDO, EAC, and AfCFTA, advocating for policies that enhance competitiveness, job creation, and industrial value addition.

Hon. Jonathan Mueke is the Principal Secretary, State Department for Livestock Development, where he oversees seven State Corporations and leads policy, research, veterinary services, disease control, marketing, and animal genetic development for Kenya’s livestock sector. He previously served as principal secretary in the State Department for Sports and was the first deputy governor of Nairobi City County (2013–2017).

With over 25 years of leadership experience, Hon. Mueke has held senior roles in ICT both in Kenya and the USA for more than two decades, alongside 13+ years in the real estate sector. He holds an MBA in Global Information Technology and Entrepreneurship from Oakland University, USA, and a BSc in Computer Science with a minor in Business Administration from Wayne State University, USA.

Passionate about community empowerment, he mentors emerging leaders through the Mandela Washington Fellowship (YALI) and champions the Ficha Uchi initiative, which has provided free school uniforms to over 10,000 children from underprivileged backgrounds, enhancing their dignity, confidence, and academic performance.

Dr. Paul Kipronoh Ronoh, CBS is the Principal Secretary, State Department for Agriculture in Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development. He holds a PhD in Leadership and Governance, an MBA, and a BSc in Computer Science, and is a member of the Harvard Leaders Excellence Alumni Network, Institute of Directors of Kenya, and a Fellow of the Computer Society of Kenya.

He oversees agricultural policy, administration of 22 state agencies, and implementation of 18 national projects across all 47 counties. Under his leadership, the ministry has advanced major reforms including the fertilizer subsidy programme (cutting prices from Ksh 7,500 to Ksh 2,500 and boosting maize production by 43%), farmer registration via KIAMIS, and policies on extension services, mechanization, insurance, and soil management.

Dr. Ronoh has also championed BETA value chain interventions in key crops, launched the National Horticulture Standing Committee, and strengthened climate-smart, market-driven approaches to boost food security and agricultural competitiveness.

Dr. Jane Kere Imbunya is the immediate former Dean of School of Education and Social Sciences at Kaimosi Friends University. She has excellent skills gained from leading teams across institutions to accomplish complex tasks in successful pursuit of the institutional visions and missions. Prior to being Dean, she served the University as Director of Quality Assurance and Management Systems. She has also previously taught at Gaborone University College, and the University of Botswana, and been an external examiner at Kibabii University, Botswana’s Open University, University of Southern Africa, and Zambia’s Open University. 

Her other notable assignments include serving as a member of the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms in Kenya, technical advisor to the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development on guidelines in developing Competency Based Curriculum designs and pedagogical strategies, and an education expert advisor to the Botswana Parliamentary Education Committee. She has published various books and journal articles, and been awarded a research grant as a principal investigator.  

Dr. Imbunya holds a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree in Arts from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Education (MEd) degree, a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) degree from the University of Botswana. Her professional affiliations include memberships to the African Curriculum Association, Society for Educational Research in Kenya and Botswana Teaching Professional Counsel.

Hon. Julius Kipbiwot Melly is a three-term Member of Parliament for Tinderet Constituency, first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017 and 2022. He currently serves as Chair of the Departmental Committee on Education, Research & Technology, a position he held from 2017 and was re-elected to in the 2022 parliament. go. ke

A trained educator, Hon. Melly holds a bachelor’s and master’s in education, with degrees from the University of Nairobi and the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton parliament. go.keparliament.go.ke. Before entering Parliament, he served as a primary school teacher and later Principal within the Teachers’ Service Commission parliament. go.keparliament.go.ke.

At the parliamentary level, Hon. Melly’s contributions span key committees: he has been a member of the Public Accounts Committee and earlier served as vice-chair and then chair of the Education Committee (parliament.go.ke). His education leadership has extended to legislative initiatives such as sponsoring the Basic Education (Amendment) Bill, 2014 DOKEZA.

HON. SUSAN AUMA MANG’ENI is the Principal Secretary of the newly established State   Department of   Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development under the   Ministry of Cooperative and Micro   Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). She is a   governance and development expert with close to 15   years’ experience in both the private   and public sectors in areas of strategic leadership, public policy   formulation, analysis and   implementation, enterprise development, institutional building, oversight, youth   and women   empowerment.
    Prior to her current appointment, Hon. Susan Mang’eni served on the Boards of the Youth   Enterprise   Development Fund (YEDF), Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and   Analysis (KIPPRA) and The   Competition Tribunal of Kenya. She was also a member of the   Working group on the socio-economic   audit of the constitution of Kenya 2010, under the   office of the Auditor General where she handled the assessment of the impact of the   constitution of Kenya 2010, on governance and public institutions. The findings from the   exercise were tabled in the National Assembly in 2016 to help shape the government   policies  and programmes.
    In the Private sector, Hon. Susan Mang’eni has engaged in consultancies and discourses focused on socio-economic and political transformation across the country, region and beyond, gaining global perspectives and insights that continue to impact on her contributions in the public policy arena. She is also part of the team that participated in the economic visioning of the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto (The Plan), in particular her role in the development of Western Region Economic Blue Prints Document.
Hon. Susan Mang’eni holds an MA in Entrepreneurship Development and a BA in Political Science and Public Administration both from the University of Nairobi. She is also, an alumnus of the 2011 International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP) a US State department Exchange programme. She is a network member of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS), the Women Democracy Network (WDN) and the Women Waging Peace International and the Pan African Movement.

Fikirini Jacobs Katoi Kahindi is the Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department
for Youth Affairs and Creative Economy, Ministry of Youth Affairs Creative Economy
and Sports. A Prominent Youth champion and leader with a passion for
youth empowerment and social change; Mr. Fikirini was appointed as Principal
Secretary at the age of 28 years on 17th April 2025, and entered the books of history
as the youngest individual ever, to hold such a high-profile position in the
government of Kenya

Eng. John Tanui, CBS is the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in charge of the State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy. Prior to joining the Ministry, Eng. Tanui was the Chief Executive Officer of the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) for over 7 years, Deputy Country CEO and Vice President of Huawei Technologies responsible for Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia and Djibouti and the Director of Technical Service Department in the same organization that he served for over of 15 years.

With over 17 years in the ICT industry and international business management, Eng. Tanui has worked in several countries in Africa and also in China acquiring knowledge and experience in Business and project management, he has keen interest and expertise in Engineering Turnkey Projects, Innovations, setup and management of industry collaborations and partnerships. He is passionate about how technology can be utilized to solve challenges facing economies.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Technology in Electrical and Communication Engineering from Moi University and MBA in International Business from the University of Nairobi where he is currently pursuing PhD in global business management. He is a member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (MIEK), a registered engineer and a member of the Academy of International Business.

Eng. Tanui is an active ICT professional who was profiled as tenth in the 2012 Top 40 under 40 by the Business Daily (Nation Media Group). He is a Council Member of Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, a council member of IEK (Institution of Engineers of Kenya) where he chairs industrialization, Environment and quality assurance committee and also serves as committee member for Advocacy, Journal and Publicity. Previously, he served as the University Council Vice Chairman at Technical University of Kenya and also as an Advisory Council Member of the Presidential Digital Talent Program.

Mr. Shadrack Mwangolo Mwadime is currently the Principal Secretary in the State Labour and Skills Development, where he is both the authorized and accounting officer. He is a career civil servant who has risen through the ranks and has a wealth of experience and over thirty years of offering leadership, policy direction, and coordination of government development projects in various counties across the nation. 

He demonstrates the capacity to mobilize resources and goodwill from various local and international stakeholders. He has excellent resource planning skills, as demonstrated by the successful completion of various government projects in the workstations assigned. He can foster peace initiatives by applying appropriate intelligence-gathering mechanisms and adopting multi-tiered negotiation approaches. He was a member of the Task Force on Provincial Administration Policy that stipulates the Code of Conduct and reviewed to improve the Terms and Conditions of service for Public Administrators. In addition, he successfully established the Administration Department at the Deputy President’s Office after the Promulgation of the 2010 Constitution and was conferred with the Honour Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) in 2014 in recognition of his exemplary work and dedication to service. 

Mr. Mwadime also engages in other social engagements, like empowering youth and young adults to positively utilize their energies, dynamism, knowledge, and innovative ideas for the good of the society, and preaching and leading services, among others, at All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi. He is a Board of Management Member at Mwasere Girls High School, Taita/Taveta County, and Chairman of the Weni Kota Clan. 

Currently, Mr. Mwadime is a PhD student in strategic management at Moi University. He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Moi University, a Master of Science in Leadership and Governance from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and a Bachelor of Arts (Economics and Political Science) from the University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya. He is a member of the African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM), a professional body for administrators.

Dr. Narendra Raval, EBS—affectionately known as “Guru”—is a celebrated Kenyan industrialist, philanthropist, and the Chancellor of Egerton University. Born in Gujarat, India, in 1962, he migrated to Kenya at the age of 16, initially serving as a temple teacher before venturing into entrepreneurship. With his wife’s support, he began a small metal trading business in Nairobi’s Gikomba market that grew into the expansive Devki Group of Companies, East and Central Africa’s largest manufacturer of steel products, roofing sheets, and cement (The Standard+1).

Dr. Raval was first appointed as the university's chancellor in 2019 and, in September 2024, was reappointed to serve another five-year term, according to Citizen Digital. Despite the largely ceremonial nature of the role, he has made tangible contributions—pledging to donate his entire chancellor’s salary to support needy students at Egerton and ensuring his company supplies goods to the university at no cost, Citizen Digital.

Beyond his business ventures, Dr. Raval is known for his profound humility and philanthropic spirit. Featured among the continent’s wealthiest, he has pledged to give away half his wealth to charitable causes while setting an example by adopting a modest lifestyle.

Professor Isaac O. Kibwage is the Vice Chancellor of Egerton University. He previously served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Planning & Development from 2017 until his elevation to Vice Chancellor in 2021. He is also a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Nairobi, having published widely in his discipline. His leadership record includes a decade (2007–2017) as Principal of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Nairobi, during which the College was recognized as a Centre of Excellence in Health Sciences by the East African Community in 2014, and research funding grew approximately fourfold.

At Egerton, Prof. Kibwage has spearheaded the strengthening of institutional governance and resource mobilisation, leading to enhanced financial sustainability measures and improved operational efficiency. He has overseen the development and review of key policies in areas such as research and innovation, infrastructure development, and income-generating ventures. Under his leadership, the University has made progress in upgrading critical infrastructure, expanding digital learning platforms, and improving research facilities to align with global standards. He has also prioritised partnerships with government agencies, development partners, and the private sector to support strategic projects and broaden the University’s impact.

A champion of innovation and academic entrepreneurship, Prof. Kibwage represented Egerton at the national innovation forum, pitching commercialization-ready breakthroughs such as improved cassava varieties and Chelalang Seeds, aimed at improving food security and farmer income. In 2024, he was appointed the inaugural Chair of the TAGDev 2.0 Partnership Council, an initiative aimed at transforming African agricultural education, which has provided

scholarships to 188 students and impacted more than 5,000 others through hands-on learning opportunities.

Prof. Kibwage is a recipient of the Head of State Commendation and was conferred the title Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya. A PhD graduate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, he has bolstered his credentials with specialised certifications in governance, sustainability, and drug policy. His career reflects a legacy of resourcefulness, visionary leadership, and a steadfast commitment to institutional excellence.

Dr. Walter Ongeti is an accomplished academician, strategic thinker, corporate governance practitioner, and seasoned leader with over 20 years of experience in research, training, and management consultancy across the private, public, and non-state sectors in multiple countries. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration (Strategy and Governance), an MBA in Strategy and Change Management, and a B.Ed. in Business Studies and Economics from the University of Nairobi.

A Certified Secretary and Full Member of the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS) and the Kenya Institute of Management (FKIM), Dr. Ongeti is also a Certified Strategy, Monitoring, and Evaluation Expert. He has taught, supervised, and examined students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and has held senior positions including Managing Director at ACL, Senior Technical Advisor on Governance and Research to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, and Strategy & Governance Advisor to the Cabinet Secretary for Sports.

Currently serving as CEO of the Kenya Accreditation Service, Dr. Ongeti has also contributed to national governance as a former Member of the Tax Appeals Tribunal. He has held leadership roles in higher education and public institutions, including Chair of the University Council at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology and board memberships at the Kenya Animal Genetics Resource Centre, Naivasha Water and Sewerage Company, and NHC Maisha Hospital.

An accomplished governance and strategy speaker, Dr. Ongeti has delivered impactful talks at forums such as ICPAK, IHRM, and iCPAR, and authored the motivational handbook Walking the Path of Success: Dreaming and Doing. Passionate about strategic leadership, governance, and community service, he actively participates in mission work through CITAM and PAG churches.

 Dr. Margaret Karembu (MBS) is the Director of ISAAA-AfriCenter (International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications – Africa region and pioneering chair, Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB – Kenya chapter). She is a senior level environmental science management specialist with extensive experience in technology transfer, environmental impact audits and modern biotechnology applications on small-scale agriculture. A science educator and communication trainer, Margaret has actively been involved in strengthening capacity for science communications and policy outreach for informed choices on modern biosciences in Africa. She has significantly contributed to the biotechnology discourse through presentations in many international fora and working papers on modern biotechnology, including the Convention on Biological Diversity Biosafety COP-MOP negotiations (2010-2018).

She is also the principal convener of the Africa Biennial Biosciences Communication symposium (ABBCsymposium), Editor in chief of DrumBeat, a monthly e-newsletter on Africa Bioscience Trends and founding chair of the African Women for Biosciences and Africa Association for the Advancement of Synthetic Biology (AAASynBio). These platforms provide stakeholders an opportunity to share experiences on modern biosciences and policy implications of emerging bioscience trends. She is very passionate about science and a strong believer in the power of innovations for transforming African agriculture into efficient and competitive enterprise for women and small-holder families. In 2020, Margaret’s efforts were recognized with a conferment by Kenyan President with a State Honour – Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS). She previously served as Council chair and vice-chair of the Cooperative University of Kenya and Meru University of Science and Technology respectively. Margaret holds a PhD degree in Environmental Science Education from Kenyatta University, where she taught for more than 10 years prior to joining ISAAA.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Prof. Bernard O. Aduda

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics, Research and Extension)

Professor Bernard O. C. Aduda, an accomplished physicist, is the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academics, Research & Extension at Egerton University. He earned his PhD in Materials Science from Imperial College London, University of London, and has held post-doctoral fellowships at internationally renowned institutions including Princeton University, Uppsala University, and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. His distinguished career includes serving as Principal of the College of Biological and Physical Sciences at the University of Nairobi (2011–2021) and in earlier roles as Associate Dean, Chairman of the Department of Physics, and member of the University Executive Board.

Prof. Aduda is a respected leader in the scientific community, having served on the Councils of the Kenya Polytechnic University College and the National Council for Science and Technology, as well as holding the position of Honorary Treasurer of the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC). A Fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences, he has supervised 10 PhD and 17 MSc graduates, published 63 peer-reviewed papers, edited books and monographs, and organised numerous international and local conferences. He has also contributed extensively to curriculum development in materials science and solar energy in Eastern and Southern Africa.

His research leadership has attracted over KSh. 220 million in funding, enabling the acquisition of state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and training opportunities for staff and postgraduate students. Under his guidance, the University of Nairobi’s Solar Academy has trained over 500 photovoltaic technologists. In 2019, his research group was competitively selected as a Centre of

Recently, Everlyn has ventured into the space of science communication and diplomacy, driven by her passion for decoding research outputs and making science accessible to the public and society at large. She has been invited to speak and train at several forums on science communication, a field she is deeply passionate about. Everlyn is committed to sharing her knowledge and skills, particularly with young scientists and members of her association, ensuring they are equipped to effectively communicate their research and engage with the community.

Derick Mugodo is a passionate agripreneur and the founder and CEO of AgriPlant Kenya, a youth-led enterprise pioneering climate-smart agricultural innovations, such as simplified vertical hydroponic systems designed for urban farming, greenhouse solutions, and micro-irrigation. He holds a degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Technology from Egerton University and is committed to transforming food systems through sustainable, tech-enabled solutions that address food insecurity, land pressure, and youth unemployment. His innovative work was recently featured in the Daily Nation’s Seeds of Gold section and Citizen TV, highlighting his contribution to redefining urban farming in Kenya. Derick is also a 2025 Fellow of the African Food Fellowship under the Food Systems Leadership Programme. Through AgriPlant Kenya, Derick continues to champion the integration of innovation, youth leadership, and sustainability in Africa’s agri-food systems.

Dr. Patrick Omondi, OGW – CEO & Director, Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI)

Dr. Patrick Omondi is a renowned wildlife conservationist with over 30 years of experience in ecological research, biodiversity planning, and national policy development. He holds a PhD in Animal Ecology from the University of Nairobi and currently serves as CEO and Director of the Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI), established under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013.

At WRTI, Dr. Omondi leads national efforts in wildlife research, ecological monitoring, capacity building, and data-driven conservation policy. His leadership has seen the rollout of major national wildlife censuses, including extensive aerial surveys of the Tsavo ecosystem, integrating advanced tools such as GPS tracking, satellite imagery, and drones to monitor habitats, migration corridors, and climate change impacts.

He has championed endangered species recovery programs for sable antelope, black rhino, and elephants, conducted ecological studies on threats like bushmeat trade, and implemented conservation safeguards during major events like the WRC Safari Rally.

Through his strategic vision, Dr. Omondi has strengthened Kenya’s wildlife management framework, aligning it with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and fostering partnerships that merge scientific research with sustainable conservation action.

Wanjama is the founder of Seed Savers Network, established in 2009, which has grown into a national movement with over 95,600 members and 112 community seed banks. His passion is rooted in the belief that communities should have the right to feed themselves, with seed sovereignty as the main approach in advancing farmers' rights.

Dr. Owuor has a wealth of experience in corporate Governance and Senior Management from Public and Private Sector for a period of more than twenty years. She has served in the Boards and Councils of National and Regional institutions and international organizations. Dr. Owuor participated in the drafting of Proposed Biosafety Bill which was enacted in 2009 and it established the National Biosafety Authority. She also participated in the drafting of the Proposed Science, Technology and Innovation Bill which was enacted in 2013 and it established National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), National Research Fund (NRF) and Kenya National Innovation Agency KENIA).

Dr. Kevin Okoth Ouko is an agricultural economist and policy expert with extensive experience at the nexus of climate change, food security, governance, and social inclusion. With over a decade of professional engagement across Africa and beyond, he has built a strong track record in research and program implementation that bridges science, policy, and practice. He holds a PhD in Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture, an MSc in Agricultural and Applied Economics (CMAAE), and a BSc in Agricultural Economics. Dr. Ouko currently serves as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), where he co-leads interdisciplinary projects under the Science, Technology, Innovation, Knowledge and Society (STIKS) programme. He has also previously lectured in several Kenyan universities, nurturing the next generation of scholars. Dr. Ouko’s expertise covers governance, climate change adaptation, blue economy, aquaculture, small-scale fisheries, renewable energy, agricultural innovation, nutrition security, rural livelihoods, and digital financial inclusion. He has also contributed to peace and conflict studies, examining issues such as climate-induced migration, resource-based conflicts, and resilience in fragile food systems. Widely published, Dr. Ouko has authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, policy briefs, and technical reports, consistently translating research into actionable policy insights. He continues to shape policy dialogues and advancing Africa’s science-policy interface

Salome Machua – Policy, Legal and Institutional Analyst 

I'm an environmental management specialist in the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). I hold a Master's degree in Marine Management from Dalhousie University, Canada, and a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry from Moi University, Kenya. I have over 30 years’ experience in the field of environmental management in the development of policies and regulations in waste management.  I coordinate environmental inspectors countrywide in the enforcement of environmental legislation.  I supervise environmental inspections, environmental Auditing, and monitoring at  NEMA. 

I was instrumental in the development of the National Solid Waste Management Strategy, the Sustainable Management Act of 2022, and the Environmental Policy.  I'm involved in promoting cleaner production technologies in industries and institutions through a compliance assistance program. 

I have trained in green and circular economy, and I'm passionate about sensitizing stakeholders to shift from linear management of waste to circularity.

I promote policies and strategies that embrace green energy for a clean and healthy environment. Her experience is an added advantage to this team in ensuring relevant policies and legislation are analysed and complied with. 

Prof Eng. Japheth Onyando is a professor of Soil and Water Engineering professor and Dean Faculty of Engineering at Egerton University. Graduated with a BSc in Agricultural Engineering from Egerton University (1990), MSc in Soil and Water Engineering from the University of Nairobi (1994), and PhD in Civil Engineering majoring in Engineering Hydrology and Watershed management from Ruhr University Bochum in Germany (2000). He became an associate professor in 2003 and a professor in 2013. He has over 50 publications and has supervised over 20 postgraduate students, 8 of whom are at the PhD level. He has 25 years of experience in teaching, research, and outreach in diverse areas of hydrology and watershed management, with several projects focusing on building resilience to cope with extreme weather conditions caused by the impacts of climate change. Notable ones include the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP) funded by the World Bank, which involved the transfer of technologies in semi-arid rangelands of Baringo to promote crop production through enhanced soil moisture storage. Water in nexus with agriculture funded by Orange Knowledge Programme, which focused on enhancing on competencies and skills in soil and water management. Mau Mara Serengeti (MaMaSe) project for improvement of water security, livelihoods, and ecosystem sustainability funded by the Netherlands Embassy. He has been involved in policy development and operationalization in the water sector, focusing on institutionalization of systems and frameworks for efficient and sustainable equitable water use under the GIZ-Water Sector programme (2004-2018) and others. Currently coordinating three projects, namely catchment to tap funded by the Netherlands embassy, Metro2SDG on managing peri-urban watersheds funded focusing on SDG 2 by NRF, and training of tractor operators, which is being implemented together with Hello Tractors. He established the Center for Integrated Water and Basin Management (CIWAB) at Egerton University Faculty of Engineering with the support of the Netherlands embassy for training policy makers, practitioners, and end users through short courses focusing on water security, agricultural water management, and mechanization. He was the main consultant in the Lake Baringo Land and Water Management Project sponsored by UNEP-GEF/UNOPS in 20,02, which was focusing on building resilience among the communities in ASALs. 

As a professor of Horticulture at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), in Kenya, Professor Abukutsa has dedicated over 30 years to researching African indigenous vegetables. Her pioneering work has demonstrated the nutritional value of these vegetables, highlighting their potential to combat malnutrition in Africa and provide a sustainable source of income even in challenging climates. Her research has shown that vegetables such as amaranth greens, jute mallow, spider plant, and African nightshade are rich in protein, iron, calcium, folate, and essential vitamins, offering a nutritious alternative to meat for those unable to afford it. Professor Abukutsa's influence extends beyond academia. She has led over 20 multidisciplinary research projects on agrobiodiversity and has been instrumental in shaping agricultural policies in Kenya. Her advocacy has led to the incorporation of indigenous vegetables into diets recommended by Kenya's Health Ministry, particularly for HIV patients. She has published nearly 100 scientific articles and served in key leadership roles in the University system, including Dean, Director, School of Graduate Studies at Maseno University, and a recent five-year term as Deputy Vice Chancellor. Research, Production, and Extension at JKUAT (2017-2022). She is an advocate of open science, open research, and open access publishing. Her contributions to science and society have earned her numerous accolades, including the 2009 CTA Woman Scientist award, the 2010 African Union 1st Prize for Women Scientists in Earth and Life Sciences, the Edinburgh medal in 2014 and in 2024, Kenyan, National Outstanding Research Award (NORA). In addition to her research, she has played a significant role in the conservation of indigenous food and medicinal plants, notably through her work on the Maseno University Botanic Garden. Professor Abukutsa is a passionate promoter of agrobiodiversity and a dynamic leader in the African scientific community, with a commitment to excellence, integrity, and sustainable development. She holds a BSc in Agriculture, MSc in Agronomy from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and a Ph.D in Horticultural Sciences from the University of London, UK. Prof Abukutsa served as AAS Governing Council Member (2020 -2025) and Chairperson ofthe  Board of Directors of German Agro-Action (WHH) (2019 -2025). In 2025 she was appointed the Editor- in -Chief of the Editorial Board of the AU, African Scientific, Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC)’s Journal of Agricultural Sciences. 

Edward holds a Diploma in Dairy Technology from Egerton University and has over 20 years of experience in dairy production and quality management.

He is a certified Lead Auditor in QMS and FSMS ISO 22000, with strong expertise in cheese manufacturing, product innovation, quality systems implementation, and regulatory compliance. He has worked with major dairy companies, including Brookside dairy and New KCC and has led various projects such as probiotic and lactose free yoghurt development, Cheese quality improvement, training and cost-reduction initiatives.

He is passionate about enhancing food quality and safety while promoting sustainable practices in the dairy sector.

Professor Richard Mulwa an Associate Professor of Horticulture at Egerton University, is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, Finance & Planning). A distinguished horticultural scientist, he holds a PhD in Horticultural Biotechnology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an M.App.Sc. in Horticulture and a Graduate Diploma from the University of Melbourne, as well as a BSc and Diploma in Horticulture from Egerton University. His career at Egerton spans over three decades, during which he has served as Director of the Crop Management Research and Training Centre, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, and in numerous strategic leadership roles.

Prof. Mulwa has chaired and participated in key institutional committees, including the University Strategic Plan Review Committee, the Agricultural Biotechnology Committee, and the Quality Assurance Board. His influence extends nationally through appointments such as membership on the Floricultural Wages Council of Kenya, the Board of Management of Kagumo Teachers’ College, and technical expert roles in floriculture curriculum development. He has also contributed his expertise as a consultant for organisations including CIMMYT, the World Bank, and the Micro Enterprise Support Programme Trust.

His research interests encompass greenhouse technologies, plant tissue culture, molecular breeding, and field-based crop improvement. He has led projects on genetic improvement of crops such as wheat, chickpea, pigeon pea, and indigenous vegetables, often using molecular and biotechnological tools. Through his leadership in research, policy development, and strategic planning, Prof. Mulwa has advanced the University’s capacity for innovation, resource mobilisation, and sustainable agricultural development.

Dr. Rael Teresa Adhiambo is a Scientist in the Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Schedule at the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI). She holds a Ph.D. in Oceanography and Limnology, and her work focuses on integrating scientific research into evidence-based policies that address climate change, environmental sustainability, and community resilience. She has extensive experience in developing STI policy frameworks, supporting climate action in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sectors, and enhancing community adaptation strategies. Dr. Adhiambo is passionate about bridging the gap between research and policy to drive transformative development in Africa. 

Bio: Boniface Akuku (PhD)

Boniface is a Digital Development Specialist with a Ph.D. in information systems, specializing in data science and digital transformation. He began his career launching digital solutions at Coca-Cola and CARE International. As CTO at the US Army Medical Research Directorate – Africa, he deployed continent-wide disease surveillance and strengthened health responses across Africa. Later, as Director of ICT at KALRO, he modernized Kenya’s agriculture sector by deploying digital technologies. At the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN, he integrated digital and AI tools to enhance program outcomes. Over the past 15 years, he has earned major awards, including the 2016 UKAID/FCDO Climate Information Prize and the 2019 Africa CIO Excellence Award. Boniface has advanced degrees in computer science and an undergraduate degree in IT. He is a certified Systems Engineer. He publishes peer-reviewed work. Currently he is a consultant with the World Bank Group and advances his postdoctoral research, while also leading Kilimo Hakika (KH) Limited and KH International, a Non-Profit Organization, as the founder.

Dr. Gideon M. Kivengea holds a PhD in Hydro-biology from the University of Nairobi and has built a distinguished career in scientific research and leadership. He currently serves as the Director of Research in the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation under the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping national research priorities and innovation policy.

His scholarly contributions are evidenced by published research articles in reputable scientific journals, reflecting his deep expertise and commitment to advancing knowledge in his field. In addition to his academic and research accomplishments, he has served on the boards of several prominent institutions, including the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA), Maasai Mara University, Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH), and the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI). Through these roles, he has significantly influenced science, technology, and innovation governance in Kenya.

Professor Obwoyere is a dedicated educator, researcher, and leader in Natural Resources Management. His vast experience, critical analytical skills, and global outlook make him an invaluable contributor to the field, committed to fostering sustainable solutions for current and future generations.

With over 20 years of professional experience, including positions as Chair of the department and Dean of Faculty at Egerton University, Prof. Obwoyere has demonstrated a deep understanding of policies and practices relevant to project implementation and management. He has expertise in Quality Management Systems (QMS ISO 9001:2008 and 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (EMS ISO14001:2004) implementation and auditing, certified by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

Prof. Obwoyere's skills extend to strategic management and leadership, monitoring and evaluation, and he is a member of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM). His background as a landscape ecologist equips him with a comprehensive understanding of gender issues, including youth, women, and disadvantaged persons, in relation to an ecosystem-based approach to natural resources management. Prof. Obwoyere has immense competence in Natural Resources Conflict Management and negotiations.

Having served as the focal person for Environmental and Social Safeguards at the World Bank funded Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Agriculture and Agribusiness Management at Egerton University, Prof. Obwoyere has extensive experience in policy research. He is proficient in adaptive management, sustainable land and forest management, strategic planning, environmental impact assessment and audit, quality management systems setup and audit, as well as policy formulation analysis and evaluation. Additionally, he possesses strong conceptual and strategic analytical abilities

Steven Runo is a Professor of Molecular Biology at Kenyatta University. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Kenyatta University in 1998, followed by a Master's degree in Biotechnology from the same institution in 2003. After completing his Master's, he was awarded a PhD fellowship by the Rockefeller Foundation to pursue Molecular Biology in a Sandwich program between Kenyatta University and the University of California, Davis, earning his PhD in 2008. He then undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Sheffield (UK) and the University of Virginia (USA) before accepting a faculty position at Kenyatta University. Currently, his lab uses molecular genetic tools to understand interactions between parasitic plants that limit crop production in Africa and their hosts. In recognition of his contributions to science, Steven Runo was awarded the Royal Society Africa Prize in 2020.

Prof. Nancy W. Mungai is a distinguished Soil Scientist and academic leader with over two decades of expertise in biological nitrogen fixation, bio-based agricultural inputs, and soil-centered approaches for climate change mitigation and adaptation. She is currently a Professor of Soil Science in the Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Crops, Horticulture, and Soils at Egerton University, Kenya.

She earned her PhD in Soil Science from the University of Missouri, Columbia (USA), where she specialized in soil organic carbon and nitrogen fractions, enzyme activities, and microbial diversity in temperate alley cropping systems. She also holds an MSc in Soil Science from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania, and a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.

Prof. Mungai has successfully coordinated over 12 major research projects and 20+ grants, many focusing on climate-smart agriculture, sustainable intensification, and innovative approaches to food security. She has been at the forefront of continental initiatives such as the Transforming African Agricultural Universities to meaningfully contribute to Africa’s growth and development (TAGDev) program, supported by the Mastercard Foundation through RUFORUM. In its first phase, the program supported more than 188 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and in Phase 2 (2023–2033), it is set to empower institutions and young Africans to drive inclusive, equitable, and climate-resilient socio-economic development.

Her research contributions include work with the Sustainable Agriculture Intensification and Rural Economic Transformation (SAIRET+) consortium, led by Michigan State University, and leadership roles in projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, and RUFORUM.

As a mentor and academic leader, Prof. Mungai has supervised over 20 graduate students and produced more than 90 scholarly works, including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, technical reports, and proceedings. Her publications address critical areas such as soil health, biochar, indigenous vegetables, and climate change adaptation strategies among smallholder farmers.

Beyond her research and teaching roles, she has held significant leadership positions at Egerton University, including serving as Acting Director of Research and Extension (2020–2024) and Director of the Board of Undergraduate Studies (2012–2020). She has also contributed to community and national service as Chair of the Board of Management at Njoro Girls High School (2018–2022) and Member of the Governing Council of Baraka Agricultural College (2013–2022).

Dr. Michael Kiplangat Cheruiyot, PhD, HSC
Chief Officer – Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services, County Government of Nakuru

Dr. Michael Kiplangat Cheruiyot is a distinguished veterinary professional, environmental scientist, disaster management expert, and seasoned public servant with over four decades of exemplary service in Kenya’s public sector.

He holds a PhD in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, where his doctoral research focused on Preparedness and Management of the Avian Flu Epidemic Threat in Nakuru County. His academic portfolio also includes a Master of Science in Environmental Science from Egerton University (Social Impact of Urban Cattle Waste Management in Nakuru Municipality), a Master of Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture, Science and Technology (Livestock Marketing Channels in Northern Kenya), and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi.

In addition, Dr. Cheruiyot has earned two Postgraduate Diplomas—International Relations & Diplomacy (University of Nairobi) and Disaster Management & Humanitarian Assistance (Masinde Muliro University)—as well as a Diploma in Animal Health from Egerton College.

Dr. Cheruiyot’s public service career spans 41 years, including 38 years in the National Government where he rose to the position of Senior Director of Veterinary Services before retiring in 2020. Since 2022, he has been serving in the County Government of Nakuru as the Chief Officer in charge of Livestock, Fisheries, and Veterinary Services, where he continues to champion sustainable livestock development, fisheries management, and animal health programs.

 Prof. Bebe is a renowned scholar and practitioner with over 30 years of experience in livestock development, university education, research, extension, and consultancy services. His professional expertise spans systems analysis, value chains, food systems, circular and bio-economy, agroecology, regenerative agriculture, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Throughout his career, Prof. Bebe has been driven by a strong commitment to translating theory and science into practical solutions, pioneering innovative approaches to address complex sustainability challenges in food systems. He has successfully managed and coordinated numerous collaborative projects with national and international partners, earning recognition as an accomplished academic, researcher, and leader with exceptional management competencies.

Prof. Bebe has provided consultancy services to the Government of Kenya, the East African Community, and the African Union, where he has contributed significantly as an author and co-author of key strategy and policy documents. These include frameworks on animal resource development, livestock policies, dairy sector master plans, agricultural extension models, and climate change project evaluations.

As a respected scholar, Prof. Bebe serves as a scientific reviewer for leading international journals, conferences, and technical position papers. His prolific academic contributions include more than 170 peer-reviewed scientific papers, book chapters, and editorial works. Beyond publishing, he has played a vital role in capacity building, having supervised 14 PhD and 34 MSc students to successful graduation.

Widely acknowledged for his scholarly excellence, policy influence, and leadership in agricultural and livestock development, Prof. Bebe continues to contribute to advancing sustainable food systems and climate-resilient agricultural practices in Africa and beyond.

Prof. Liu Gaoqiong is a highly accomplished horticultural scientist specializing in crop protection, protected cropping systems, and agricultural biotechnology. He earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from Nanjing Agricultural University, China, where he later served as a Professor of Horticulture.

With a career spanning several decades, Prof. Liu has made significant contributions to agricultural research, education, and innovation. In 1997, he joined Egerton University, Kenya, as a Visiting Professor, bringing his wealth of expertise to strengthen Kenya’s agricultural science and technology capacity. His academic and research work has had a lasting impact, particularly in advancing sustainable horticultural production and pest management strategies.

Prof. Liu has an impressive scholarly record, having published 31 peer-reviewed scientific papers, contributed to 6 academic books, and secured 4 patents related to agricultural innovation. His work bridges the gap between research and practical application, promoting environmentally sound and economically viable farming practices in both China and Kenya.

Beyond his academic achievements, Prof. Liu is recognized for fostering international scientific collaboration and mentoring the next generation of agricultural scientists.

Mr. Godfrey P. Kalerwa is the Deputy Director and Head of Research Standards and Licensing at the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), Kenya, a position he has held since 2016. In this role, he oversees the consideration and approval of research license applications by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Act, CAP 511. He is also responsible for monitoring and evaluating research and development activities, as well as providing leadership in intellectual property management across agencies and institutions in Kenya.

Mr. Kalerwa’s professional career spans over two decades in research, regulation, and governance of science, technology, and innovation (ST&I). Before joining NACOSTI, he served in various capacities, including:

• Research Officer at the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI)
• Senior Research Officer at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology
• Principal Science Secretary at the same Ministry

His areas of expertise include research regulation, ethics, security, intellectual property management, and strategy development. He has also served as a team leader in the development of institutional strategic plans.

In governance, Mr. Kalerwa has contributed to the growth of key state corporations, serving as a Board Member at the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), the Numerical Machining Complex (NMC), and the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI). Prof. Dr. sc. agr. Alexander K. Kahi, AMP is a renowned expert in Animal Breeding and Genomics, holding a professorship at Egerton University's Department of Animal Sciences. He leads the Centre of Excellence for Livestock, Innovation and Business (CoELIB) project, showcasing his commitment to innovative livestock development. Prof. Kahi is a member of the esteemed Permanent International Committee of the World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production, recognizing his significant contributions to the field. He is also a founding member of the African Animal Breeding Association (AABA) and a member of the Working Group on Animal Seed within the African Union's African Seed and Biotechnology Partnership Platform. Christopher Kioko is a passionate scientist and budding entrepreneur with a strong interest in smart agriculture and sustainable innovation. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Analytical Chemistry and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Environmental Chemistry at the University of Nairobi. 

With over three years of hands-on experience in agribusiness, Christopher co-founded BICIFU Technologies Ltd, a company specializing in smart irrigation systems. He currently serves as the CEO, working closely with his team to develop and unveil the company’s prototype solutions tailored for modern farming challenges.

Richard Kinyua is an accomplished software developer with five years of experience in designing and delivering innovative, user-centric technology solutions. Currently pursuing an MSc in Computer Science at Egerton University, with a specialisation in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, he is dedicated to harnessing emerging technologies to address real-world challenges. Dr. Johnson Ocan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at Kabale University, Uganda, with a keen research interest in the intersection of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and oral literature. His work examines how indigenous narratives, cultural expressions, and storytelling traditions can inform and promote CSA practices that increase agricultural productivity, enhance resilience to climate change, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Ocan actively engages in interdisciplinary collaborations linking the humanities and agricultural sciences, aiming to integrate local knowledge systems into sustainable farming solutions. Through teaching, research, and community outreach, he advocates for knowledge-sharing approaches that empower farmers, preserve cultural heritage, and strengthen climate adaptation strategies across East Africa.

Prof. Abdi Yakub Guliye, EBS, is a career educator, researcher, and public officer, with many years of leadership and managerial experience in both the public and private sectors. Currently, serving as Advisor, Livestock and Rangeland Management in the Executive Office of the President of the Republic of Kenya, supporting the implementation of the agricultural pillar of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) Plan.

More recently (until January 2023), he served as Commissioner with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of the Republic of Kenya, having completed the statutory one term of six (6) years. At the IEBC, he chaired the Commission’s Research, Technology, and Strategy Committee, as well as the Elections Operations and Boundaries Delimitation Committee. He was also a member of other committees: Human Resources, Training and Administration; Audit and Compliance; and Finance and Procurement.

Previous experience of Prof. Guliye includes over 25 years of teaching, research, and student supervision at the Department of Animal Sciences, Egerton University (Kenya). His last assignment at Egerton University was being Director, Directorate of Quality Assurance (June, 2014 – January, 2017), where he also served as Deputy Director (Dec., 2010 – June, 2014). Additionally, he served on various boards of institutions/organizations, having chaired several committees of those boards. In recognition of his national service, he was honored with the award of Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) by the President of the Republic of Kenya on 12th December, 2022.

In terms of education, Prof. Guliye holds a PhD in Animal Nutrition from The Rowett Research Institute and The University of Aberdeen, Scotland (UK); an MSc in Animal Production, also from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland (UK); a BSc in Animal Production from Egerton University (Kenya); and a Diploma in Animal Husbandry from Egerton College (Kenya). Over the years, he has attended many short courses, seminars, and conferences locally and internationally.

Dr. Hezron Rasugu Mogaka is a seasoned environmental economist and academician based at the University of Embu, where he serves as a senior lecturer and chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension. With a career of 35 years spanning public service, regional development institutions, and global consultancy, including working with the World Bank, the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA), the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), and the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), among others, Dr. Mogaka has consistently championed sustainable natural resource management and climate-resilient agriculture. His academic and professional pursuits are grounded in a strong passion for promoting the circular economy, particularly through research and capacity building in organic waste valorization, biochar application, regenerative agriculture, and climate-smart innovations among smallholder farmers. Driven by a vision for green transformation in rural economies, he actively advocates for inclusive, resource-efficient systems that close environmental loops and enhance both livelihoods and ecosystem resilience. Dr. Mogaka has a passion for digital learning at the university level.

Dr. Musa Njue Rugiri, PhD, is a senior lecturer in agricultural engineering at Egerton University with over 33 years of experience in innovation-driven research, academia, and agro-industrial product development. His work bridges engineering research and practical solutions, with a focus on renewable energy technologies, climate-smart mechanization, and resilient food systems. He has partnered extensively with the private sector to commercialize locally developed agri-tech innovations, including threshers, pelletizers, feed mixers, and solar dryers, to strengthen rural industrialization and food security.

A PhD graduate in agricultural engineering from BOKU, Vienna, with MSc and BSc degrees from the University of Nairobi and Egerton University, respectively, he has played a leading role in policy dialogues on mechanization and innovation, developed curricula in agro-industrial engineering, and mentored a new generation of engineers in applied agricultural innovation. He is a registered member of the Engineers Board of Kenya, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya, the Kenya Society of Agricultural Engineers, and the International Solar Energy Society.

Passionate about climate-smart solutions and sustainable food systems, he continues to champion multi-stakeholder engagement to advance agricultural resilience in the face of changing weather conditions.

Professor Albert Chakona is Managing Director and Chief Scientist at the NRF-South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (NRF-SAIAB) and an Honorary Research Associate at Rhodes University.
An internationally recognized ichthyologist, he specializes in taxonomy, systematics, phylogeography, and biogeography of freshwater fishes.
His research integrates molecular genetics, morphology, osteology, physiology, histology, and ecology to document and map fish diversity in southern Africa.
He has significantly advanced the taxonomy of families such as Amphiliidae, Anabantidae, Cyprinidae, Galaxiidae, Mormyridae, and Procatopodidae, publishing over 80 scientific papers.
Professor Chakona’s leadership at NRF-SAIAB drives aquatic biodiversity research that supports sustainable socio-economic development and fosters global scientific collaborations.

Prof. Chris Odindo is a UK-based academic, consultant, and entrepreneur with extensive international experience in business, research, and innovation. Beginning his career in Kenya’s financial services sector, he later held roles in New York and London before earning a scholarship for an MBA and contributing to a joint Harvard-MIT project on technology commercialisation strategies. He went on to complete a fully funded PhD in the UK, focusing on the competitive and innovative dynamics of social and technological systems.

Chris has led influential research and consultancy projects for major financial institutions—including HSBC, AVIVA, Scottish Widows, RBS, and Barclays—as well as public-interest organisations such as Citizens Advice, Which?, and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. His work has informed UK government policy through engagements with HM Treasury, the Department for Work and Pensions, the Financial Conduct Authority, and Parliament.

In recent years, his focus has shifted to higher education strategy, policy, and innovation in the age of artificial intelligence. He works with bodies such as Advance HE, the QAA, and UK government AI taskforces, and advises universities in the UK and Kenya on AI strategy, policy, and implementation. He currently leads the development of custom GPTs and is spearheading an AI-native quality assurance system designed to enable continuous, intelligent, and predictive oversight in higher education.

Chris also contributes to national AI research infrastructure in Kenya, collaborates with NHS England and Leicester City Council on AI tools for clinical practice and health literacy, and chairs the NRF Working Group on Artificial Intelligence and Cultural Heritage. An experienced entrepreneur, he has founded and exited multiple ventures, including East Africa’s first white-label SaaS platform for online insurance and pricing.

Prof. Robert Wahiti Gituru is a leading Kenyan scientist, professor of plant biosystematics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), and Founding Director of the Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre (SAJOREC). A member of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences, he is widely recognized for his groundbreaking work on plant diversity, genetic variation, and the effects of climate change on ecosystems.

Prof. Gituru has received top international honors, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences Award for International Scientific Cooperation and the Chinese Government Friendship Award, for his exceptional contributions to science and global collaboration. Through his leadership at SAJOREC, he has championed innovative research, built capacity for African scientists, and fostered transformative partnerships between Africa and China to address biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainable development challenges.

Associate Professor Nzula Kitaka is the Director of the Directorate of Marketing and Resource Mobilisation at Egerton University. A specialist in Aquatic and Water Science, she previously served as Director of the Board of Postgraduate Studies (2016–2022) and has supervised numerous master’s and doctoral candidates. She has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, contributed book chapters, and served as a reviewer and proposal assessor for various academic and funding bodies.

Prof. Kitaka is Vice President of Africa-UniNet, an international research consortium, and serves on the Advisory Board of Water-WISER CDT, a UK-based doctoral training initiative. She co-founded the Tropical Limnology Course in 2004, which has evolved into a major regional training platform in aquatic science, and has been instrumental in establishing joint degree programmes in partnership with Ethiopian universities. Her leadership in research networks such as AQUAHUB has fostered collaboration among over 200 members globally.

Her professional engagements have included service on the Eastern Africa Water Association Council, the National Council for Science and Technology, and advisory roles for European Union and World Bank projects. She has been a driving force behind international conferences hosted at Egerton and has worked extensively on climate innovation, green technologies, and conservation, including protecting sea turtles along the Kenyan coast. Prof. Kitaka’s career reflects a commitment to advancing science, building partnerships, and mobilising resources for impactful research and sustainable environmental management.

Zanele holds a PhD in Environmental and Water Science from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. She is a professional natural scientist certified by the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions. She is passionate about environmental conservation, water conservation, and a holistic approach to the conservation of natural resources. She has a specific interest in plant water use monitoring, using state-of-the-art equipment, she has also created and modified plant water use models, that were validated using ground observations. Her PhD research focused on agricultural water management, developing technologies that promote smart water use in the agricultural sector, advocating for water use efficiency without compromising sustainable crop production, and subsequently improving food security. 

Dr. Albert Nkwasa—PhD in Engineering Sciences, Research Scholar at IIASA

Dr. Albert Nkwasa holds a PhD in Engineering Sciences (2023) from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, graduating with the highest academic distinction upon the recommendation or felicitations of the thesis jury iiasa.ac.at. He currently serves as a research scholar in the Water Security Research Group within the Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) iiasa.ac.at.

An expert in modeling freshwater ecosystems under the pressures of global change, Dr. Nkwasa focuses on the complex interplay among climate change, land use dynamics, water quality, and agricultural systems in African contexts. His methodological approach leverages integrated modeling, remote sensing, and big data synthesis to understand hydrological and water quality shifts—and to attribute these changes to their underlying drivers (iiasa.ac.at/WEF Nexus). He has also contributed insights into drought propagation and global water-quality monitoring challenges (IIASA PUREiiasa.ac.at).

Christine Wangeci Ndiritu is an emerging agricultural researcher with a strong focus on horticulture, post-harvest handling, and circular economy innovations in food systems. Passionate about reducing food losses and enhancing agricultural sustainability, she has developed hands-on expertise in crop management, post-harvest practices, agricultural research design, data collection and analysis, and multi-stakeholder engagement across the agricultural value chain.

Christine’s work bridges scientific research and practical application, with a particular interest in food waste upcycling as a pathway to improve nutrition, create value-added products, and promote environmental sustainability. She is currently a Research Assistant with the Geckocir Project at the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), where she plays a key role in exploring circular economy solutions to transform food waste into marketable products. In addition, she supports other research initiatives under the Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Security (AFNS) program, contributing to evidence-based interventions that improve food systems resilience.

Academically, Christine holds a Diploma in Project Management from the Kenya Institute of Management, a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from the University of Nairobi, and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Horticulture at the same institution. Her educational background, combined with practical field experience, positions her as a promising voice in advancing sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate-resilient farming systems.

Dr. Musa Mulongo leads the Vaccine and Diagnostics team at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi. He also coordinates the Transforming Animal Health Services & Solutions for LMICs (TAHSSL) Platform at ILRI. TAHSSL is a tripartite (ILRI, GALVmed & ClinGlobal) Research & Development platform that focuses on translation and commercialization of promising livestock vaccines and diagnostics for low-and-middle income (LMIC) countries. Previously, Musa was a Senior Program Specialist with the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF) at the International Development and Research Centre (IDRC) in Ottawa Canada. In this role, he was responsible for the design and delivery of cutting-edge vaccine discovery and development projects with multiple international partnerships. Before joining IDRC, Musa completed two post-doctoral research fellowships at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization - International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac) in Saskatchewan, Canada and Wellcome Trust Research Program in Kilifi, Kenya. Musa holds a PhD in Immunology & Vaccine Development from the Royal Veterinary College of the University of London (UK) and a Master of Science, also in Immunology, from Kenyatta University in Kenya. 

Dr. Ruth W. Waineina is a results-driven research scientist with over 25 years of research and consulting expertise. She holds a Doctor of Animal Science degree from Egerton University in Kenya, majoring in Animal Breeding and Genomics, and an M.Sc. in Animal Sciences from Wageningen University, The Netherlands, specializing in two areas: Animal Breeding and Genetics and Livestock Production Systems. She holds a B.Sc. degree in Animal Production from Egerton University, Kenya. Her research interests include the goal of functional genomics and productivity in tropical livestock systems. Dr. Waineina is a Chief Research Scientist at Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO)—Dairy Research Institute (DRI), Naivasha, Kenya. She is the head of the Small Ruminant Research Programme (SRRP) and National Sahiwal Stud (NSS) in DRI. She has worked with a wide range of stakeholders along the agricultural product value chain, from farm to market to consumers. Her involvement in R&D has resulted in increased animal productivity among livestock-keeping communities in numerous counties. Dr. Waineina has consulted for various. She has presented papers in various scientific forums. She has coauthored over 20 publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Ruth is a member of the Animal Production Society of Kenya.

Salma L. M. A Omollo, a Food Science and Dairy Technology professional specializing in sustainable food systems, agro-industrial waste management, and product innovation. I hold a BSc in Dairy Technology and Management and I am currently pursuing an MSc in Food Science and Technology at Egerton University, where my research focuses on valorising cheese whey into lysine-enriched protein biomass for animal feed. I am also actively involved in an enzyme technology research targeting lignocellulose degradation in livestock feed, aimed at improving feed digestibility and reducing methane emissions to support climate change mitigation and sustainable livestock production.

As the Head of the Food & Dairy Sustainability Innovation Hub (FODASIH) — a specialized division of Heroe Smile Consultancy — I lead projects that integrate food safety, waste valorisation, and climate-smart solutions to enhance efficiency and sustainability in food and feed  systems. My work is backed by over six years of experience in research, quality control, and process optimization, collaborating with academic institutions, industry players, and international partners. 

In addition to my consultancy role, I am a Co-Founder of Joy Makers Empowerment Circle (JOYMEC), a public benefit organization operating in five Kenyan counties. JOYMEC runs programs through six key departments:  Agriculture, Environment and Climate Concerns, Education, Gender and reproductive health, and Leadership & Good Governance — all designed to improve livelihoods, promote sustainable development, and foster inclusive growth.

I am passionate about linking science to community transformation, designing and implementing practical solutions that help businesses, cooperatives, and communities adopt innovative, sustainable practices — bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world application.

Amukelani Maluleke is a researcher with the Expanded Freshwater and Terrestrial Environmental Observation Network (EFTEON). He completed his PhD at Stellenbosch University with the support of the National Research Foundation (South Africa) and completed all his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, specialising in Geography and Air Quality.

His doctoral research focused on quantifying carbon, water, and energy exchanges in semi-arid ecosystems—particularly the Savanna and Nama-Karoo biomes—using Eddy Covariance flux measurements in combination with remotely sensed vegetation data and indices. His interest in Eddy Covariance began during a 2018 placement with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) through the highly competitive National Research Foundation Internship Programme. This experience laid the foundation for his PhD fieldwork with EFTEON and later, in 2022, a research exchange year at the Thünen Institute in Germany through the DAAD programme, where he contributed to fieldwork and method development in Eddy Covariance research.

In his current role, Amukelani manages and operates a network of environmental monitoring instruments, collecting data across atmospheric sciences, hydrology, and biogeochemistry, and is responsible for the processing, management, and quality control of these datasets.

Professor Owuor is an associate professor of agribusiness management and holds a PhD in agribusiness management through a sandwich program between Egerton University, Kenya, and the University of Kiel in Germany. He is the Director of Research and Extension and doubles as Center Leader/PI for the World Bank-funded African Center of Excellence in Sustainable Agriculture and Agribusiness Management (CESAAM). Before, he was the Director for Income Generating Units at Egerton University for 3 years (2021-February 2025). George also served Egerton University as managing director for the Agro-based University Investment Company between 2017 and 2020. Before the above, George served as Chair of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness for 2 years. This was after a 4-year leave of absence as the regional manager for the Collaborative Research and Postgraduate Program (CMAAE) between 2011 and March 2014, and at the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) between 2011 and 2024. CMAAE is a capacity-building and research program that covers 17 universities in 13 countries in Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa, funded by a consortium of funders such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, African Capacity Building Foundation, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, and Future Agricultures, and in collaboration with FAO-Agricultural Investment Planning. 

Division—Working on knowledge sharing on the implementation of the CAADP process and the AFRACA Rural Finance Knowledge Management Programme, among others. Besides, George has been involved in various consultancy works, such as with the International Finance Corporation to create farms as Centers of Excellence, the Syngenta Foundation on market-led extension, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) on smallholder dairy value chain development, and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMT) on potential adoption of biotechnology in maize, among others. George has successfully graduated 1 post-doctoral fellow, 14 PhD students, over 50 students and has over 70 publications in internationally refereed journals. His interest is in capacity building and Participatory Impact Assessment (IA) research work covering crop and livestock value chains. 

Dr.Kenneth Monjero – fondly known as “Dr. Fun” – is a biotechnologist, educator, and passionate science communicator who has transformed the way children engage with science. Working with the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO Biotech), Kenneth applies advanced agricultural research to drive innovation in food security and sustainable farming.

He is the Founder of Fun & Education Global Network and the Pioneer and Director of the KALRO Science Centre Kenya—dynamic platforms dedicated to making science fun, interactive, and relatable. With a postgraduate degree in Crop Science from the University of Nairobi, Kenneth blends academic expertise with a creative flair for learning.

Recognized internationally for his unique teaching methods, Kenneth uses imaginative experiments, real-world problem-solving, and storytelling to inspire children aged 5 to 18. His approach turns classrooms into laboratories of curiosity, fostering a love for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and nurturing the next generation of innovators.

Through school visits, public science fairs, and outreach programs, “Dr. Fun” has reached thousands of learners across Kenya and beyond, empowering young minds to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers. His work continues to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and everyday understanding, making science not just a subject—but an adventure.

Dr. Catherine Kilelu is the Director of Communication, Outreach, and Partnerships and a Senior Research Fellow in the Agriculture, Food, and Nutrition Security (AFNS) Program at ACTS.  She leads on enhancing ACTS’ visibility and reach as a regional science, technology, and innovation (STI) research and policy think tank through the dissemination of quality research, evidence-based policy engagement, and expanding partnerships. Catherine holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from Wageningen University, under the Knowledge, Technology, and Innovation Chair, and has vast experience in research for development, having worked for various organizations.

She leads a diverse portfolio of action research projects in sub-Saharan Africa on sustainable and inclusive innovation-driven agrifood systems transformation linked to food and nutrition security, market development and competitiveness, job creation, and resilient livelihoods. She also works in sustainability transitions. She has published on these themes. She was a member of the Lancet COVID-19 Commission Task Force on Green Recovery.

Joyline Gichuki is an accomplished analytical chemist and regulatory professional advancing food safety and sustainable chemistry in Kenya. As an Analytical Officer at the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), she leads efforts in pesticide analysis, regulatory compliance, and laboratory quality management ensuring agricultural products meet safety standards and support Kenya’s global trade position. With MSc and BSc degrees in Chemistry from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), she operates at the intersection of science, policy, and innovation.

Joyline played a key role in developing Kenya’s National Pesticide Residue Monitoring Framework, a cornerstone for food safety and export readiness. Her leadership in baseline studies on pesticide residues has helped align Kenya’s agricultural practices with international standards.

Her research spans sustainable materials and green technologies, with publications in Chemistry Africa and Scientific Reports. She holds a registered utility model for extracting cellulose from coir fibers—an eco-friendly solution for agricultural waste valorization. Through continued innovation and advocacy, Joyline promotes safer pesticide use and bio-based alternatives, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future for Africa
